Recently, I wrote a recipe article about the Lowcountry shrimp boil! As someone from Savannah, Georgia, I grew up eating many shrimp boils over the summers during my youth and early adulthood. Rarely did people need an excuse to get together over some shrimp! Inevitably, people were left with leftovers to put into the refrigerator. Over time, my family came up with our favorite ways to eat the leftovers. Below, I list easy ideas for how to use the leftovers if you decide to make a Lowcountry shrimp boil at home!

Leftover Shrimp Boil Frequently Asked Questions:

Before we get to leftover shrimp boil ideas, we want to answer some potential questions you have first. If we do not answer your question, feel free to leave a comment in the section below or email us at [email protected].

How Do You Store Leftover Shrimp Boil?

To store the leftovers, place all the cooked ingredients in airtight containers such as a Ziplock bag or a Tupperware. Then, place them in the refrigerator. Eat or cook with the leftover ingredients over the next 2-3 days.

Or, you can freeze the ingredients! Learn how to freeze them below!

Can You Freeze Leftover Shrimp Boil?

Yes! You can easily freeze leftover shrimp boil! I prefer to freeze each type of ingredient separately. Typical ingredients of a shrimp boil include:

  • Shrimp (Shell On)
  • Small Potatoes
  • Corn (On the Cob); And
  • Sausage

First, I separate each ingredient into individual bags. Then, I label each bag. Typically, I label it with the ingredient it contains (sometimes, once frozen, it is hard to tell what a bag contains) and the date. Finally, I remove all the air when sealing the bags and place them in the freezer!

Freezing Tips: You can freeze the shrimp shell on or shell off. You can also freeze the corn on the cob or cut it off the cob.

How Do I Reheat a the Leftovers?

Reheating leftover shrimp boil can be a pain. Cooked too long, the shrimp will have a rubbery, tough texture. Here, we give our biggest tip on how to reheat leftover shrimp boil.

When reheating your shrimp boil, whether in the microwave or boiled in a pot on the stovetop, I recommend heating the corn, potatoes, and sausage separately from the shrimp. Then, you can quickly reheat the shrimp on its own or serve the shrimp cold with the reheated other ingredients.

What to Do With Leftover Shrimp Boil:

Now that we answered some potential questions about your leftover shrimp boil, we want to list some ideas for what to do with your leftover shrimp boil. We list them below.

Deconstructed Shrimp Boil:

I like to serve a deconstructed shrimp boil cold the day after a party. To do so, peel the shrimp and cut them into smaller pieces. Then, cut the corn off the cob and add it to the same bowl as the shrimp. Finally, cut the potatoes and sausage into smaller pieces as well. Mix all the ingredients.

I typically serve a deconstructed shrimp boil on its own, over lettuce, or mixed with mayonnaise to make a shrimp salad.

Shrimp and Corn Chowder:

Growing up, my mother would always clean up a shrimp boil and immediately start preparing the ingredients to make corn chowder for the next day. She sat and peeled the shrimp, cut the corn off the cob, and cubed the potatoes. Once prepped, the ingredients would sit in the refrigerator until the next day.

Corn chowder is the perfect, easy recipe to make the day after a big get-together. Not only does it take just a few ingredients, but it also takes less than 30 minutes to pull together with the pre-prepared ingredients. Hint: This belly-warming soup is also good for hangovers.

Shrimp Boil Pasta (Shrimp Scampi):

Like the other ideas listed above, you can prepare and use these leftover ingredients to make a rich and creamy pasta.

Shrimp scampi is a traditional Italian-American pasta recipe. Originally, people in Italy made this dish using scampi, a tiny lobster-like crustacean. Then, Italian cooks in the United States exchanged the scampi with shrimp.

Note: The name of this dish ‘shrimp scampi’ is really funny. Literally, it is like saying ‘shrimp lobster.’
