What Is Matcha Soda?

Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from shade-grown tea leaves. The process of growing the leaves in the shade gives the matcha its unique green color and strong flavor.

While powdered tea originated in China, the shade-growing technique was invented in Japan, becoming ingrained in Japanese culture.

Matcha soda is a delicious iced matcha-based drink. This recipe combines homemade sweetened matcha syrup with sparkling water to make a light and refreshing tea drink! Learn how to make it below!

Matcha Soda Ingredient List:

Below, I list the ingredients used to make this recipe.

  • Matcha (Green Tea Powder)
  • Sparkling Water
  • Water
  • Sugar
  • Ice

Matcha Soda Tips & Tricks:

Here, I list some helpful tips & tricks to help you make this easy matcha soda recipe. If you have any questions, comment below or email me at [email protected]! I hope these tips help!

  • Rather than buy sparkling water, you can always make it at home using sparkling water machines. I personally own a Soda Stream and love it!
  • If you do decide to buy sparkling water, I recommend buying water in a glass bottle. When drinking out of plastic, I can taste the distinct plastic flavor transferring over from the bottle. You don’t want your matcha soda to have that flavor as well!
  • For this recipe, I recommend buying ceremonial-grade matcha powder. While more expensive, the flavor quality is just so much higher than the matcha powders meant for cooking and baking.
  • After making the sweetened matcha syrup, let it cool completely before making this drink. I recommend making this in advance and placing it in the refrigerator for a few hours. That way, when it is time to serve, you can just pull out the pre-made sweetened matcha syrup.

Iced Matcha Soda Frequently Asked Questions:

Now that we learned about some tips & tricks, I want to answer some questions you may have about this recipe! If I do not answer your question, feel free to leave a comment in the section below or email me at [email protected].

What Should I Eat As a Snack With Matcha Soda?

In my opinion, matcha tastes delicious with fruits, chocolate, and cheese. Therefore, I recommend eating snacks such as a fruit and chocolate board. Or, try drinking this with a decadent cheesecake!

Does This Recipe Contain Major Allergens? (Gluten, Soy, Etc.)

Before listing all of the major allergens, I want to state that all of my recipes are naturally gluten-free. On this blog, I only use and recommend gluten-free ingredients and brands. That being said, I list gluten as a potential allergen when necessary– this is because many Korean ingredients (such as soy sauce, gochujang, and doenjang) contain gluten unless you specifically buy gluten-free versions. Not only is this true for gluten, but it is true for other major allergens as well. As such, I always list allergy substitutions in the next section of my post.

This recipe does not contain 9 of the 9 major allergens. It does not contain:

  • Peanuts
  • Tree Nuts
  • Milk (Dairy)
  • Eggs
  • Sesame
  • Wheat (Gluten)
  • Fish
  • Crustacean Shellfish
  • Soybean

This recipe does contain 0 of the 9 major allergens.

Is This Recipe Vegetarian or Vegan?

Excitingly, this recipe is both vegetarian and vegan! For those following a vegetarian and/or vegan diet, this matcha soda recipe is perfect for you!

Is This Recipe Alcohol-Free?

For those interested in non-alcoholic drinks, this recipe is perfect for you! Yes, this recipe does not contain any alcohol.

How Do I Store Leftover Matcha Soda?

I recommend storing the sweetened matcha mixture separately from the sparkling water. You can store the sweetened matcha syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a few days.

Unfortunately, over time, sparkling water loses its carbonation. Therefore, it won’t taste as yummy after being opened for a while. For that reason, if it has been a while, I recommend making another matcha soda with the leftover sweetened matcha syrup and a new bottle of sparkling water.

Where Can I Buy the Ingredients for This Recipe?

For this recipe, I recommend shopping at your local Asian grocery store (such as H-Mart) for the matcha powder. There, you may be able to find a larger variety of matcha powders.

You can also find matcha at well-stocked grocery stores such as Whole Foods. Finally, you can buy matcha at specialty stores in person and online.

Where to Buy Korean Ingredients Online?

Nowadays, there are many online options to choose from when ordering Korean food online. These websites are not limited to but include:

  • Amazon
  • H-mart
  • Hanpoom
  • Wooltari
  • Seoul Mills

Directions

  • In a pot, combine your water and sugar. Then, turn the pot on low heat. As the sugar dissolves into the water, stir.
  • Once you dissolved the sugar, add the matcha powder. To do so, sift the matcha into the simple syrup. This keeps the matcha from clumping. Stir the matcha into the simple syrup using a whisk. Once combined, pour the matcha simple syrup into a glass container and let it cool completely.*
  • In a glass, add ice. Then, fill 1/3 of the cup with the matcha simple syrup.
  • Finally, fill the rest of the glass with sparkling water (or soda water). When pouring the sparkling water, pour it directly over the ice so that you can have a visual ombre effect with your drink. Enjoy!

Notes

  • *I like to store my matcha simple syrup in the refrigerator to chill completely before consuming it. That way, it is colder than room temperature.
