What Is Soju?
For those unfamiliar with soju, it is a clear, colorless, slightly sweet, and neutral-flavored spirit from Korea. As Korea’s “national drink,” soju is THE most popular alcohol amongst the Korean population, whether it be the younger generation or older.
While typically consumed as a shot or mixed with beer, people also make cocktails with this liquor. For more soju cocktail recipes, you can check out my article listing all the soju recipes I have made on the blog.
Korean Soju Sour Ingredient List:
Below, I list the ingredients used to make this recipe:

- Bitters (such as Angostura Bitters)
- Egg White
- Lime Slices
Korean Soju Sour Tips & Tricks:
Here, I list some helpful tips & tricks to help you make this easy Korean soju sour recipe. If you have any questions, leave a comment below or email me at [email protected]! I hope these tips help!
- To make this sour recipe, I recommend using a reverse dry shake. To do this, shake the cocktail with ice first, then strain the ice out, and finally re-shake.
- If your egg yolk breaks into your egg white when separating them, I recommend cracking a new egg. The egg yolk will cause the foam not to form properly when you shake the egg white with the other cocktail ingredients.
- On average, soju is about 20% ABV. The alcohol content sits between hard liquor and wine. Therefore, this cocktail has a lower alcohol content than sours made with other types of hard liquor, making it perfect for people who want to have multiple cocktails without getting tipsy. Just note that soju sneaks up on you.

Does This Recipe Contain Major Allergens? (Gluten, Soy, Etc.)
Before listing all of the major allergens, I want to state that all of my recipes are naturally gluten-free. On this blog, I only use and recommend gluten-free ingredients and brands. That being said, I list gluten as a potential allergen when necessary– this is because many Korean ingredients (such as soy sauce, gochujang, and doenjang) contain gluten unless you specifically buy gluten-free versions. Not only is this true for gluten, but it is true for other major allergens as well. As such, I always list allergy substitutions in the next section of my post.
This recipe does not contain 7 of the 9 major allergens. It does not contain:
- Peanuts
- Fish
- Crustacean Shellfish
- Milk (Dairy)
- Tree Nuts
- Sesame
- Soybean
This recipe does contain 2 of the 9 major allergens. It can contain:
- Wheat (Gluten)
- Eggs
Allergy Substitutions or Omissions:
For those with celiac disease, gluten allergy, and/or wheat allergy:
Though there are many arguments on the subject, the general consensus is that for people with celiac disease, distilled liquor is safe to consume. While I recommend avoiding flavored alcohol unless it is labeled gluten-free, you can typically consume plain distilled liquor. If you do not feel comfortable drinking any distilled liquor made using gluten-containing ingredients, I recommend avoiding this recipe unless you buy soju made without gluten-free ingredients or that is labeled as gluten-free.
For those with an egg allergy:
Many cocktail sours are made using egg whites. If you have an egg allergy, you can omit the egg white foam.
Is This Recipe Vegetarian or Vegan?
Excitingly, this recipe is naturally vegetarian! Unfortunately, this recipe does contain an egg white foam which does not allow it to be vegan. To make it vegan, omit the egg whites. Without egg whites, it is still a tasty cocktail!
Where Can I Buy the Ingredients for This Recipe?
Thankfully, for this recipe, you can buy most of the necessary ingredients at your local well-stocked grocery store.
To buy soju, you may need to shop at a liquor store or your local Asian Market (such as H-Mart). Check your state laws to find out if your Asian grocery store can sell liquor or if you will need to buy this ingredient at a liquor store.
Where to Buy Korean Ingredients Online?
Nowadays, there are many online options to choose from when ordering Korean food online. These websites are not limited to but include:
- Amazon
- H-mart
- Hanpoom
- Wooltari
- Seoul Mills
